On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the Gunnison County Board of County Commissioners officially designated Hartman Castle as a County Historic Landmark, recognizing the property’s significant role in the history and development of the Gunnison Valley.

This followed the Gunnison County Historic Preservation Commission’s approval of adding Hartman Castle to the county’s historic registry on February 25th during their regular meeting. Preservation commission member Tristen Coleman made the motion. “I motion to approve the designation of Hartman Castle, with its historical significance being that it represents the work of an important local builder, possesses high artistic value, and exemplifies a significant type of period construction,” Coleman said. “It is associated with a significant person and with significant events and patterns.”

“Hartman Castle represents an important piece of Gunnison County’s history and architectural heritage,” said Jody Reeser, chair of the Gunnison County Historic Preservation Commission. “The commission was proud to recommend this designation because the Castle tells the story of the early people who shaped this valley and the creativity and ambition that defined that era. Historic designation helps ensure that these important places are recognized and protected so that future generations can understand and appreciate the community that came before them.”

What the New Designation Means for the Future of Hartman Castle

The designation comes at a pivotal moment for the property. The Hartman Castle Preservation Corporation, a nonprofit planning to purchase it for renovation, has spent two years building community support for the effort.

“This designation is an incredibly meaningful milestone for our community,” said Pamela Williams, the organization’s president. “People in Gunnison have been talking about saving Hartman Castle for decades, but no foundation had been built—until now. The support has been remarkable, both locally and online. We are deeply grateful to the current owners, Dave and Susie Taylor, for their willingness to work with us. Their partnership has enabled the community to envision a future in which this remarkable building is preserved and shared with the public. This allows us to now proceed with applying for a History Colorado acquisition grant, which is worth up to $250,000, so that’s obviously very important for us.”

Two recent matching grants have brought supporters within reach of completing the purchase. Late last year, Loretta McDonald donated $20,000 as a matching grant, and Williams’ Island Acres Resort Motel contributed an additional $5,000. The organization has also been awarded a $100,000 acquisition grant from Colorado’s Office of Economic Development and International Tourism (OEDIT) and the Office of Just Transition (OJT). Once the purchase closes, the plan is to transform Hartman Castle into a community gathering place and venue for weddings, reunions, celebrations, and other events.

Preserving Hartman Castle for the Future

County Commissioner Laura Puckett Daniels welcomed the news. “It was very gratifying to see this application come before the Board of County Commissioners. So many people have worked for so many years to protect Hartman Castle, and as a lover of history, I am thrilled to see this dream become a reality and this landmark preserved for the future.”

In-Person Ways to Be a Castle Cheer Champion

Not all support happens online. In-person connections often leave the deepest impression and create meaningful conversations about why preservation matters.

  • Involve your business or employer – Businesses that donate are listed on our website. Their names and logos will soon be on Gunnison’s main street. The window display will be featured on social media. In the spring, we will host a special ‘Business After Hours.’ Some corporations encourage employees to nominate nonprofits to receive donations. One visitor to the Castle completed the paperwork with her employer. We now receive an annual donation!
  • Create a team or class legacy – Were you a member of a local team or class from either Western or Gunnison High School? Pool your team or classmates together and raise $500 or more, and have a permanent listing on our donor wall!
  • Do you not need a Christmas gift this year? – Let your loved ones know that what you would really like this year is a lasting gift to the preservation of Hartman Castle. Donations can be made online at our website, through Colorado Gives, Venmo, or by sending a check.
  • Host a movie night – Invite your friends over to watch Rocky Mountain PBS’s documentary “Saving Hartman Castle.” A great double feature is to also to show the documentary on Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair. Offer snacks and beverages of your choice. Don’t forget to put out a donation jar! Then share your experiences with all of us!
  • Invite three friends to follow us – A personal invitation is one of the quickest ways to grow awareness.
  • Tell us your “why” – Record a short video or write a few sentences about why preserving the Castle matters to you. We love featuring supporter stories.
  • Celebrate your birthday with us – Consider dedicating your birthday or a special occasion to Hartman Castle. It’s a heartfelt and impactful way to support preservation.

Celebrating Two Years of Progress at Hartman Castle in Gunnison

We gather (virtually if not in person) to celebrate not just a building, but a vision. A story. A shared belief that history matters, that heritage is worth protecting, and that a community’s character is something we create together, even at great distances.

Two years ago, Hartman Castle was at a crossroads. Its stone foundation and brick walls had witnessed more than a century of Gunnison’s history, but time had taken its toll. Many saw a fading landmark. But you saw possibility.

We saw a future where the Castle would once again be a place of gathering, learning, economic development, creativity, and joy. Now we celebrate how far we have come. Over the past two years, we have:

  • Formed and strengthened the Hartman Castle Preservation Corporation — a dedicated nonprofit leading this work with care and strategy. This organization with its donors will own and operate the Castle’s operations after completing the sale.
  • Completed key preservation assessments and started some of the stabilization work to the property.
  • Completed the county process to return the property to commercial use
  • Increased our social media followers from 0 to 800 and our email subscriber list to 700.
  • Raised over 75% of our acquisition goal through donations, pledges, loan commitments (if needed), and generous community support. We will continue to pursue grant opportunities.
  • Two years ago, we would not have even dreamed that we could ever attract enough attention to be awarded a Rocky Mountain PBS video. Yet through friendly connections and a compelling story, we awarded a spot in the 2024 lineup. The documentary, ‘Saving Hartman Castle’ has been televised numerous times and has over 10,000 view on YouTube alone.
  • We have given countless tours. Our tours grow in size. One group visited in 2024 with 25 in attendance. In 2025, the group doubled in numbers.
  • IIn 2025, Hartman Castle was selected as a finalist for Colorado’s Most Endangered Places designation. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, the application has been refined and resubmitted for the 2026 cycle.
    Colorado’s Endangered Places Program is recognized statewide as a leader in preservation advocacy. As Colorado Preservation, Inc. explains, the program not only brings vital visibility to vulnerable historic places, but also “acts as a catalyst for action, connecting communities with resources, professionals, and tools to chart a path forward.”
    Selected sites will be officially announced at Colorado Preservation, Inc.’s Saving Places Conference to be held February 11–13, 2026.
  • Most importantly, we have built a movement of people who believe that historical places anchor us. The power of place.

This is more than preservation work. It is cultural stewardship. It is making sure that future generations will walk these grounds and feel the same wonder we feel today.

This year, momentum has taken hold.

We have seen individuals, families, businesses step forward to say:
“Yes. This matters.”
“Yes. Gunnison’s story deserves a place to live.”
“Yes. Let’s contribute to something lasting.”

Your continued support tells us we are on the right path.

The final steps rarely belong to chance. They belong to commitment. To the people who understand that we are not just preserving a building. We are adding to the story and the future of our community.

So, as we celebrate this second anniversary, we invite you to stay engaged.

Because in a few short years, we when stand on these grounds of Hartman Castle, not only will we celebrating a saved 135 year old building, but we will be celebrating its rebirth.

We will once again hear music in the courtyard, laugher in the rooms, host schoolchildren on field trips, weddings in the gardens, engage with our college students, and community events that remind us why this place is special.

And when that day comes, we will know that it was all of us who made it happen.

Gunnison Cattlemen’s Days and the Legacy of Colorado Cattle Country

Each July, the Gunnison Valley celebrates its deep-rooted ranching heritage with Cattlemen’s Days—an event that honors the grit, tradition, and community spirit of Colorado’s ranching families. As rodeos, parades, and 4-H events take over town, it’s the perfect time to reflect on one of the first cattlemen to brave the terrain and shape this legacy: Alonzo Hartman.

Long before Gunnison became a hub for ranching and recreation, Alonzo Hartman crossed the continental divide and brought one of the first herd of cattle into Western Colorado. He arrived in Gunnison on Christmas Day of 1872, noting in his biography:  

My job was to guard the cattle and generally look after the interested on the Ute Indians. The first winter was the worst; five feet of snow. I rode a government mule to from Los Pinos to the Gunnison River. It snowed all day and we were soaking wet when we arrrived in camp, but Jim Kelley soon had a good blaze in the fireplace…We spent the winter there without seeing anyone for over three months. We had 2000 head of sheep and 3000 head of cattle to take care of in that deep snow, but we never lost a single one.

Alonzo eventually settled on what was known as the Dos Rios Ranch. He persevered through unforgiving winters and long periods of isolation, building a life—and a legacy—defined by toughness, grit, and dedication to cattle ranching. These are the same values celebrated during Cattlemen’s Days and upheld by today’s ranching families across the state.

Alonzo and his wife Annie’s grand stone home, affectionately known today as the Hartman Castle, still stands as a testament to this legacy built by him, Annie, and other founders of Gunnison.

But, time has taken its toll. The historic home is in desperate need of restoration. Without immediate action, this piece of Colorado ranching history could be lost—that’s where we come in!

Saving Hartman Castle

Hartman Castle Preservation Corporation is a 501(c)(3) grassroots nonprofit working to restore and preserve Hartman’s historic ranch home in Gunnison, CO. Our mission is to protect this important landmark—not just as an architectural gem, but as a symbol of Colorado’s cattle country history. We envision a space to gather and create community through shared values and a love for the Gunnison Valley; a space where visitors can indulge in the past, enjoy the present, and find excitement in the future.

Restoring the Castle means preserving the legacy of early cattlemen and ensuring future generations understand the strength and determination that shaped western Colorado.

Historic preservation is more than just saving beautiful old buildings—it’s about safeguarding the soul of a community. This Historic Preservation Month, we reflect on the social power of preservation and placemaking—how saving historic places like Hartman Castle helps build stronger, more resilient communities. 

What Is Placemaking?

Placemaking is a people-centered approach to planning and revitalization. It emphasizes community input, local culture, and shared values to shape public spaces that promote well-being and belonging. When rooted in preservation, placemaking allows us to retain the stories, struggles, and triumphs embedded in historic places—reminding us not only where we came from, but who we are. It also helps us connect to each other and our local environment, strengthening community in the process.

Preservation as a Social Catalyst

Preserving historic sites can ignite community pride, foster civic engagement, and even address issues of equity and representation. Historic buildings are tangible reminders of a community’s layered narrative. When we protect and repurpose them, we invite people to experience history in place—and give future generations the tools to understand and interpret their heritage.

The Molly Brown House: A Denver Story

One of Colorado’s most iconic preservation success stories is the Molly Brown House in Denver. In the early 1970s, the home of Margaret “Molly” Brown—philanthropist, suffragist, and Titanic survivor—was under threat of demolition. A group of determined citizens, led by Historic Denver Inc., rallied to save the house. Their efforts were successful, and the Molly Brown House Museum opened in 1971.

But the impact didn’t stop there.

This grassroots campaign not only preserved an important piece of Colorado’s history—it sparked a movement. The rescue of the Molly Brown House inspired the formation of Denver’s historic preservation ordinance in 1967 (passed shortly before the campaign) and helped solidify a framework for saving other historic neighborhoods and landmarks. It proved that preservation could be a public, participatory effort—and that citizens could be powerful stewards of their city’s story.

Today, the Molly Brown House Museum serves not just as a tourist attraction, but as a hub for community education, advocacy, and dialogue around women’s rights, immigration, and social change. It is living proof that preservation can preserve more than architecture—it can preserve purpose.

Every May, communities across the country observe Preservation Month, celebrating the places that tell the story of our past and shape our future. Here in Gunnison, Hartman Castle isn’t just a relic of local history—it’s a powerful reminder that preserving our heritage has real economic value.

At Hartman Castle Preservation Corp., we believe that restoration isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about investment. Across the country, historic preservation has proven to generate jobs, attract investment, and revitalize neighborhoods. Gunnison has an opportunity to harness this same power by preserving one of its most iconic structures: Hartman Castle.

The Economic Engine of Historic Preservation

Historic preservation is a smart financial strategy. According to a 2011 study conducted by Clarion Associates for the Colorado Historical Foundation and History Colorado, every $1 million spent on preserving buildings in Colorado generates approximately 32 new jobs. Preservation not only generates more jobs, but it also keeps more money circulating in local economies. Rehabilitation projects typically hire local contractors, purchase materials locally, and rely on professional services like architects, engineers, and preservation specialists who live and work in the area.

In fact, 60–70% of the economic impact of preservation projects tends to remain in the community. Investing in restoring Hartman Castle benefits more than a single site—it supports a network of local workers, small businesses, and skilled professionals in the Gunnison Valley.

Preservation also makes financial sense for property owners. According to Colorado Preservation Inc. and History Colorado, homes in historic districts generally appreciate at higher rates, are less volatile in downturns, and recover more quickly after economic slumps. In places like Durango, Leadville, and Trinidad—where historic preservation has been prioritized. 

Entire communities have experienced economic revival as a result.

A Magnet for Tourism and Business

Historic places are also destinations. Visitors are drawn to places with unique architecture, stories, and sense of place—features that new construction can’t replicate. Heritage tourists, in particular, tend to stay longer and spend more than other travelers. According to the Colorado Tourism Office, these visitors are motivated by authentic cultural experiences and are more likely to seek out historic sites, local museums, and community events.

Historic Preservation is Good for Business—and Our Community

Restoring Hartman Castle can help Gunnison tap further into this powerful tourism market. The castle’s distinctive architecture and romantic backstory provide the perfect setting for guided tours, special events, weddings, and cultural programs. It could become a regional draw and revenue-generating community asset with thoughtful restoration.

Businesses benefit from preservation too. Entrepreneurs increasingly seek historic buildings for retail, restaurants, and creative workspaces because these places offer character and charm that stand out in a competitive market. In fact, a study published by the National Trust for Historic Preservation found that small businesses are more likely to thrive in older, smaller buildings, where rent is often lower and the environment is more distinctive.

By preserving Hartman Castle, we’re also preserving an opportunity for future economic growth—for artisans, event planners, cultural organizations, and tourism-related businesses that could thrive alongside a restored landmark.

In short, when we invest in preservation, we’re investing in ourselves.

Preserving historic buildings is one of the most sustainable actions a community can take. The greenest building is the one that’s already built. Rehabilitation projects reduce construction waste, conserve embodied energy, and limit the environmental costs associated with demolition and new development.

As cities and towns seek ways to meet climate goals, reusing existing structures should be a priority. Restoring Hartman Castle aligns with this ethos by minimizing resource use while maximizing community benefit. Additionally, many preservation projects qualify for state and federal tax credits, making them fiscally responsible investments. In Colorado, the Historic Preservation Tax Credit provides up to 35% in credits for qualifying rehabilitation expenses—a significant incentive to help fund restoration while reducing financial risk.

 

Strengthening Communities Through Heritage

Perhaps most importantly, historic preservation strengthens the social fabric of our communities. It provides continuity, identity, and a sense of place. Historic sites like Hartman Castle are landmarks not just for their architectural beauty but also for the stories they tell—about the people, values, and visions that shaped Gunnison.

Restoring the castle means creating a space where history is remembered and lived. It becomes a site where residents can gather, learn, celebrate, and build community. Studies have shown that residents of communities with preserved historic places report higher levels of civic engagement and pride. In short, when we invest in preservation, we’re investing in ourselves.

Hartman Castle tells the story of Annie and Alonzo Hartman, local visionaries whose legacy still shapes our town. By restoring their home, we honor their contributions and extend that legacy for generations to come. We also designate a place in our community to dive further into the history of this area, both before and after the white settlers arrived.

 

What Restoration Looks Like

So, what does it take to bring Hartman Castle back to life?

The castle was once a beacon of beauty and pride. Built in 1892, it is filled with imported tile, stained glass, and architectural details unmatched in the region, brought all the way from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. But time and the elements have taken their toll. Today, the structure requires repair, a new roof, and utility service updates. All this will be handled once purchased.

Thanks to community support and a dedicated board of volunteers, Hartman Castle Preservation Corp. has already taken critical first steps: conducting assessments, forming partnerships, and launching fundraising campaigns. Also important: we have received approval from Gunnison County to return the Castle to commercial use. Rental income from the Castle will help support its future upkeep. With the right investment—supported by public interest, preservation tax credits, and grants—we can return the castle to its rightful place as a hub for cultural, educational, and economic activity.

 

A Vision for the Future

We envision a future where Hartman Castle serves as more than a historic monument. It could host tours, school programs, arts events, and small business workshops. It could be a gathering space for weddings, community meetings, and cultural celebrations. It could help educate a new generation about Gunnison’s history and inspire pride in our shared heritage.

And that’s not just a dream—it’s a practical, economically sound plan. As preservationists, we know that good stewardship of historic places pays real dividends. With careful planning, community support, and strategic funding, Hartman Castle can become a self-sustaining asset that supports Gunnison’s economy, enriches its culture, and strengthens its community.

Who are Annie and Alonzo Hartman?

Two of Gunnison’s early white settlers, Alonzo and Annie Haigler Hartman, left a compelling legacy. Alonzo arrived in the valley as a U.S. military agent and cowboy, tasked with keeping livestock alive through the Gunnison winters to feed the Ute people, who had been displaced from their hunting grounds and relocated to the Western Slope. When the discovery of gold and silver led to further Ute relocation and opened the area to white settlement, Alonzo played a key role in founding the city of Gunnison and building the irrigation ditches that beautified it. He quickly became an influential community leader and businessman.

Annie, a socialite, artist, philanthropist, teacher, and community activist, was deeply involved in charity work and the fight for women’s rights. She also often partnered with Alonzo in his business ventures. Both Annie and Alonzo supported and often advocated for people from backgrounds and cultures different from their own. In Alonzo’s biography, he mentions his friendship with Chief Ouray of the Ute, writing “he and I became fast friends” and saying, “I never knew [the Ute] of causing the white man trouble unless there was just cause.” 

Later in his biography, Alonzo casually mentions “the party of gypsies” they would welcome to camp on their land every Spring—and during a time when cities were issuing proclamations banning such groups. Historic newspaper clippings also mention Annie among a small group of Gunnison women who ensured “Aunt” Susan, a freed slave and beloved Gunnison community member, had a proper burial site upon her passing. By many accounts, the Hartmans were known to spread love to all, regardless of their backgrounds.

While it would be impossible to list all the ways the Hartmans contributed to Gunnison—both during their lifetimes and through their lasting impact—one treasure stands above the rest: Hartman Castle.

The Hartman Castle

The home itself holds profound significance. Built in the 1890s from plans Annie developed with her minister, the Castle is a stunning example of Victorian-era design, blending Queen Anne and Gothic styles. It remains an unaltered time capsule, showcasing classical architectural features, many of which were acquired at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The Castle hosted many significant early Gunnison events and today offers visitors a vivid glimpse into upper-middle-class and ranch life on the Western frontier.

Thanks to Annie and Alonzo’s enduring leadership and characters, the Hartman Castle Preservation Corporation now has the rare opportunity to showcase not only the Castle but also the broader history of the Western Slope, including cattle ranching, boom and bust mining economies, resiliency and hope, the contributions of Gunnison’s Black community, Native American history in Colorado, and the advancement of women’s rights.

The Women Behind the Colorado Cliff Dwellings Association

Virginia McClurg was an educated woman, a writer, and a teacher who relocated to Colorado Springs in 1877 for health reasons. At that time, the world eagerly sought stories about the ‘new’ discoveries in the West. In 1882, Ms. McClurg became a writer for the New York Daily Graphic and covered a story about “buried cities and lost homes.” In this role, she visited the cliff dwelling known as Sandal House on the Mancos River, making her one of the first white women to explore Mesa Verde—a name she helped establish.

McClurg’s Efforts to Preserve Colorado Cliff Dwellings

However, Virginia McClurg was not the only writer who brought attention to the region. Other explorers and journalists, including one of Gunnison’s founding fathers, “Professor” Richardson, published articles and photographs. In 1885, Richardson ran an extensive series in the Gunnison Review-Press, which was picked up by other newspapers. This widespread publicity attracted treasure seekers, profiteers, and looters to the cliff dwellings. In 1891, a Swedish anthropologist even shipped six hundred of the most remarkable artifacts back to Sweden, sparking outrage in the United States.

Alarmed, in 1897, McClurg mobilized the Colorado Federation of Women’s Clubs to take action. She convinced the women to establish a standing committee to “investigate and promote the cause of the Colorado cliff dwellings.” At the time, the Federation included over five thousand women from various clubs across Colorado. About half a dozen women’s clubs were established in Gunnison and Crested Butte. Annie Hartman belonged to one of the first ones, The Monday Afternoon Club. Those women helped to establish other clubs once their membership reached capacity.

In 1900. the Federation committee became the independent Colorado Cliff Dwelling Association (CCDA), adopting the motto ‘Dux Femina Facti’, roughly translated as “Feminine leadership will accomplish it.” McClurg and Lucy Peabody, both members of the Monday Afternoon Club, played key roles—McClurg as regent and Peabody as vice-regent. Their goal was to preserve the ancestral Puebloan sites in the Mesa Verde region by advocating for national park designation and protecting the dwellings from further looting and destruction.

The women undertook an ambitious campaign: writing letters, raising funds, leading press tours, leasing land from the Utes, and rallying over 250,000 women to support their cause. They also corresponded with politicians and Ute leaders, including Chief Ignacio and Chief Acowitz.

Through persistent advocacy, the CCDA’s work led to the creation of Mesa Verde National Park in 1906, earning it the nickname the “Women’s Park.”

In 1901, McClurg and her allies secured a treaty with the Utes, granting the CCDA water rights, permission to build and maintain roads and collect the tolls for the roads. The agreement, which lasted ten years for $300 annually, was partially funded by soliciting twenty-five cents from each Colorado State Federation of Women’s Club member. This treaty helped safeguard the fragile cliff dwellings while the fight for national park status continued.

In March 1902, the Gunnison Monday Afternoon Club included the cliff dwellings on its agenda. Although records of that meeting do not exist to our knowledge, the club’s members most likely contributed to the effort.

Through persistent advocacy, the CCDA’s work led to the creation of Mesa Verde National Park in 1906, earning it the nickname the “Women’s Park.”

Annie Hartman, a longtime Gunnison Monday Afternoon Club member, was honored at the club’s 20th anniversary as one of the four founding members still active. The club always met rotating between members’ homes, which meant they frequently visited the Hartman’s, especially during the first twelve years at the Castle when it served as a popular venue for galas, dances, teas, and special events.

We are fortunate that, once restored, we can gather, plan, and decorate in the same rooms and utilize the Castle’s architectural features. We will tread softly where their footprints remain, appreciating this special gift.

This story was challenging to find and seldom told. We discovered it first in Janet Robertson’s excellent book The Magnificent Mountain Women: Adventures in the Colorado Rockies, which is readily available and a good read.

Additional information came from this 1978 publication from National Park History. It seems to have come from the Denver Westerners’ ROUNDUP.

Our local Gunnison newspapers provided information about Sylvester Richardson’s role in ‘promoting’ the Cliff Dwellings.

Keeping the “Heart” in Hartman

 

In 2025, we started our “Keeping the ‘Heart’ in Hartman” campaign to encourage our community to celebrate the love stories that brought us the historic Hartman Castle. 

Our hope for that campaign was that everyone subscribed to recieve our Newsletter would respond with at least a small amount. The goal was similar to that of the Colorado Cliff Dwellers Association, who mobilized the Colorado State Federation of Women’s Club members to donate 25¢ (equivalent to $10 today) toward their goal of designating Mesa Verde a National Park.

Preserving Colorado History One Story at a Time: “Aunt” Susan Bryan

While Colorado may be a relatively newly established place in terms of its borders and name, the area’s human history goes back thousands of years. For this story, we aren’t going back quite that far. Instead, we are diving into Colorado’s history during the era of Westward expansion, which coincided with the end of the American Civil War in the late 1800s. The overlap of these two historical periods in the United States is especially important for telling the story of the woman we are about to introduce; for she made her way to the mountains of Colorado after becoming a freed slave in Missouri when the Union defeated the Confederacy. 

Introducing “Aunt” Susan

“Aunt” Susan Bryan was a former slave from Missouri who became a recognized midwife in Gunnison, Colorado, until her death in 1908. The most likely scenario is that Susan made the journey from Missouri to Gunnison by foot or wagon, as most did at that time—a feat to be in awe of. She had eight children of her own, yet spent life as a freed slave caring for others’ children, including the Hartman children. Such a life was not uncommon for Black women of the time, whose primary source of economic power was providing domestic services to white families.

Stories like “Aunt” Susan’s deserve to be preserved for generations to come.

“Aunt” Susan’s Role in Colorado History

“Aunt” Susan and the life she lived was a testament to the importance of the domestic work of Black women, which allowed the matriarchs of white families, such as Annie Hartman, to pursue hobbies and interests outside the family, such as art and community work through the Monday Afternoon Club. In this way, we have “Aunt” Susan to thank for the many impactful women in Gunnison’s early years, as she cared for their children and homes, which freed up their time to pursue roles in the community.

While she was a caretaker and worked for many Gunnison families, she was also a valued community member in her own right. As shown in many local newspaper clippings from her time in Gunnison, “Aunt” Susan was well-integrated into the community. For example, her visits to Glenwood Springs for Strawberry Day and Grand Junction for Peach Day are both mentioned in the Gunnison News-Champion and Gunnison Tribune, respectively.

Deep Bonds and an even Deeper Impact

These and countless other mentions of “Aunt” Susan in the “Local Matters” sections of the local newspapers suggest her role in the community went beyond her domestic work. When we think about her work as a midwife, it is not hard to imagine how she developed close relationships with many families, particularly the women and children of Gunnison.

The photograph below captures a moment of love and trust between “Aunt” Susan and Leah Hartman. It comes from the Hartman family’s photo album, where she appears several times alongside family members. The inclusion of “Aunt” Susan in the family album suggests the Hartmans saw her as just that—family. They deeply valued her contributions to their home.

This same photo was sent by Leah herself to the Gunnison Pioneer Museum, with the letter pictured below. It reads:

Dear Mrs. Fogg,

We returned not long ago from a seven weeks trip by auto through the East and Canada and found the card about the banquet. 

We hope it was a success this year and that the museum is coming along. We shall send some contributions later. They seem to be doing a lot in the East about preserving our heritage. The DAR chapters, especially, have done a great deal.

The letter makes clear how important “Aunt” Susan’s role in Gunnison’s history was to Leah Hartman, one of the many children she cared for. We can only imagine that this sentiment was shared by the many children whose lives “Aunt” Susan touched.

Honoring “Aunt” Susan’s Life and Contributions to Colorado History

The community’s appreciation for “Aunt” Susan’s contributions was shown in the efforts to erect a monument in her memory. This effort ensured her contributions were not lost by an unmarked grave—for her fellow Gunnison women saw the true value “Aunt” Susan brought to so many. 

Thanks to Annie Hartman and a small group of other Gunnison women who raised the money for her gravestone, “Aunt” Susan’s memory continues to live here in Gunnison’s cemetery. In fact, you can still visit her gravesite, pictured below, at the cemetery in town. But, we hope to continue honoring “Aunt” Susan’s legacy as one of the many stories to be showcased through preserving the historic Hartman Castle in Gunnison, one of many homes she helped maintain.

“Aunt” Susan’s Story is a part of Colorado History

Stories like “Aunt” Susan’s deserve to be preserved for generations to come. Without such stories, our Colorado history is not complete. Here at Hartman Castle Preservation Corp. (HCPC), we are working hard to preserve stories like “Aunt” Susan’s and others’ stories by preserving one of the oldest modern homes in Gunnison County.
